Since August 2008, Charles-Mathieu Brunelle has been the director of Espace pour la vie (Space of Life Montreal), a department of the City of Montreal that includes the Botanical Garden, Biodome, Insectarium and Planetarium Rio Tinto Alcan. Together, these 4 science museums attract some 2.2 million visitors per year.
At Espace pour la vie (Space of Life Montreal), the City of Montreal is implementing an ambitious business plan worth nearly $200 million to position Montreal as the flagship of a vast movement for biodiversity. Following the completion of the Biodiversity Centre at the Botanical Garden (2011) and the Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium (2013), which is in the process of being certified LEED Platinum, the implementation of the Insectarium’s Biodome Migration and Metamorphosis projects has begun.
The largest natural science complex in Canada, Space for Life is attracting international interest. Mr. Brunelle has presented the concept on several occasions, including at the 11th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity in India.
Mr. Brunelle is also associated with several achievements that have marked the cultural life of the city, such as La TOHU, which he founded and of which he was the Executive Director for nine years. He has also contributed to the growth of Compagnie Marie Chouinard and the Cinémathèque québécoise.
