The mission of Space for Life and its four museums (the Biodôme, Insectarium, Jardin Botanique, and Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan) is to reconnect humans with nature. Today, issues of biodiversity demand that we change our behaviours, both as individuals and as a society. The Ville de Montréal has undertaken a major transformation of its scientific museums with a focus on the museums’ content and visitors’ experience of nature. Aside from the paradox, how can new technologies be woven into this process?

Digital transformation has impacted all sectors of the economy, including how we design, build, and use our living environments. This has included new tools (BIM, energy performance softwares) that allow for transdisciplinary design and construction; the remodelling of the construction materials value chain (transparency around materials and access to information); and the redefinition of shared space thanks to digital platforms (AirBnB, Breather).
How might digital technology change our relationship with the built environment, both now and in the future?
The co-presenters will discuss the “Deep-Performance Dwelling” – TeamMTL’s entry to the 2018 Solar Decathlon China competition. This award winning Net Zero Energy row house prototype was a collaboration between McGill University, Concordia University and lead partner Hydro Québec. The presentation will build on this experience and discuss future research and activities that intertwine the built environment with the energy sector as it relates to deep-decarbonization pathways in addressing climate change.

The Université de Nantes first experimented in 2017-2018 with a construction process that used Batiprint3D, a robotic 3D printer. The result was YHNOVA, a high-rise building constructed in just 54 hours and now lived in for over a year. Now, the university is working to contribute to construction 4.0.

Like many other professionals, architects are now seeing their working methods transformed by new technologies. This has been the case since hand-drawing gave way to computer-assisted drawing, right up to the omnipresence of IT tools in every aspect of the architect’s work. This conference reflects on the impact of new technologies on architectural design and construction techniques. Emphasis is placed on the advantages of new technologies that, more than ever before, allow exceptional buildings to become a reality. The conference also looks at the methods that architecture has developed to sustain the major changes brought by digital technologies; changes that affect how we work, study, have fun, and interact. Indeed, architecture and interior design are reinventing living spaces to make them sites of interconnection—open spaces dedicated to communities with a growing desire to share, exchange, and collaborate.
